Team Vardo Annual Awards Banquet - Thursday, December 6th, 5:30 PM, Somerset Clubhouse
at

Hellos Vardos:

Professor Schultz has secured the
Somerset clubhouse for the Team Vardo Annual Awards Banquet.  Next up:  The menu (this will be a catered event) and the Audio-Visual extravaganza.

Some food for thought from VardoFriend Kirsten RE:  The Awards Banquet:

“BYOB sounds good to me, that way everyone is happy with the beverage choices.  In my silly brainstorming world I thought it would be kind of fun to set up one of the areas as sort of a "Vardo sports expo" area (or table), you know where we all bring in any extra gu's or schwag that we have received from events that we won't use ourselves to donate/swap with others...this could also be a good place to showcase any Vardo t-shirts (past or present) and any pending ideas (ie, visor or t-shirt designs in the works) and have brochures of upcoming race events of interest available.  Also, I thought it might be fun to get a GIANT piece of blank white paper with the title "things I couldn't run without..." then, as people arrive they can jot down their favorite things/gear to share.”

We need to tell you that there was some damage to the statue of the American Bison in front of the house in Big Sky.  We did attempt to prevent the damage, throwing stones at, and hitting, the attacker.  The attacker could not be dissuaded, and kept up his assault for eight hours. Des Moines Marathon / Half Marathon Report

From Mrs. Dr. Bradshaw:

Here's some photos from Sunday morning. I regret that I did not take a photo of the "Vardo port-a-party", where we first found the Vardos gathered in front of a line of kybos. http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=25364&l=4e1be&id=704612106  Also, the attached photo from the DSM Register page shows the improbable--Katie crossing the half marathon finish line at the same time as full marathon winner David Chepkwony. I've also attached results from the Vardos I could find in the results. I don't know Jenny's last name, so I missed her. Mike Mullins had a bad day and didn't finish. A few other Vardos were in attendance, but not running. –Katie

21st Annual Run for the Roses

A reminder that this fine event will be on Sunday (5K Run/Walk at 9:00 AM, 10K Run at 10:00 AM).  This year, it will be held at the new Ames Middle School, and features a fine Omelet Breakfast, which begins at 9:30 AM.  Not planning to run or walk this year?  You may wish to assist Karen Klotzbach at the finish line with collecting race number tags.  I’ll make sure she brushes her teeth and puts on a little deodorant Sunday morning.

Special Notes for This Week

Tuesday Night Group Run – Father Fencl has promised “door prizes” gathered from his travels to various 5K’s and continuing education courses at the Our Lardy of Vardo diocese headquarters in Protivin.

Thursday Night Group Run – Will meet at the new
Ames Middle School.  Plan is to scout the Run for the Roses’ new course. Somebody bring a map and compass.

Team Vardo Annual Holiday / Awards Banquet

For the past eight or nine years, this fine event has been held the first week of December or before Christmas or something like that. Our friend Kirsten Peterson was looking into reserving some funky clubhouse for this year’s festivities, and there was talk of perhaps a catered dinner / BYOB. Discuss amongst yourselves, and then e-mail the Executive Committee with your thoughts and observations on the matter. This will prompt the convening of an ExecComm meeting to make a final decision on the venue, menu, and Mt. Dew.

Twin Cities Marathon

Don’t miss Kori’s recap of the TC Marathon at Danielle’s fine blog:
http://insertwittyteamnamehere.blogspot.com/

Important Information From Mr. W.Q. Schmitt, Senior Water Pollution Control Officer, City of Alleman, IA

As Ben Franklin said, "In wine there is wisdom; in beer there is freedom, in water there is bacteria". In a number of carefully controlled trials, scientists have demonstrated that if we drink 1 liter of water each day, at the end of the year we would have absorbed more than 1 kilo of Escherichia coli, (E. coli) - bacteria found in feces.  In other words, we are consuming 1 kilo of poop.

However, we do NOT run that risk when drinking wine & beer (or tequila, rum, whiskey or other liquor) because alcohol has to go through a purification process of boiling, filtering and/or fermenting. Remember: Water = Poop, Wine = Health

Therefore, it's better to drink wine and talk stupid, than to drink water and be full of crap. This valuable information is provided as a public service to improve your “quality of life.”

Tom Schultz just called me to say that YMCA Woods (aka Reactor Woods) is
currently submerged in mildly radioactive rainwater. With that in mind, I
have decided that we shall run today at Munn Woods (behind Carr Pool) again
today at 5:30pm. Also factoring into this decision is an allegedly
forthcoming marathon...anything that looks like a hill is not my friend this

week.

Saturday Group Run / Bradshaw Boo Bash / A Moment for Science With Kecia
at

Friends, foes, and nappy-headed Vardo’s,

Here’s some fine information from a smorgasbord of Vardo’s.  First up, Professor Schultz:

Here are the routes for Saturday:

8 mile: (Start time is
7:30 AM)
http://www.mapmyrun.com/run/united-states/ia/ames/1070934561
(Directions are long to write, I'll explain on Saturday) The map is a "connect the dots" run - see if you can figure out what the outline makes...

4 mile: (Start time is 8:00 AM)
http://www.mapmyrun.com/run/united-states/ia/ames/140481178

- Out of Gateway park drive
- down mortensen toward the new Middle school
- loop behind the middle school and go across the bridge
- follow the asphalt trail to State St. (make sure you bring a plastic grocery bag to collect Snipe)
- Go South on State until you get to the driveway for the X-country course, and hop on the course
- go around the south end of the X-country course to Storm St.
- go east on Storm until you hit Gateway Hills Park Drive (the road in front of towers)
- and ride the wave in

Both routes start at Gateway Hills Park (the Carrol Marty Disc Golf course Park) and both are a bit convoluted (like me) so be sure to check the map.  I am going to ask Bill Pattinson if I can put water for the 8 milers at his house as I'm not sure if the park water fountain will still be on up there.  There is a porta-john at the park if people need it.

And now, a note from Mrs. Dr. Bradshaw:

Given Jeff's job situation, this is likely to be the LAST BRADSHAW HALLOWEEN PARTY IN IOWA.

DATE: Saturday, October 27

TIME: 7pm

LOCATION: 314 E 6th St (east of Bandshell Park, white duplex just past the "dead end" sign, left-side door)
COSTUME THEME: come dressed like someone/something ANNOYING. (And yes, this means that if you come without a costume, you--the non-costume-wearer--are annoying.)

Snacky foods & non-alcoholic beverages provided. BYOP (bring your own poison)

Friend George,

Hello there, we are back from sunny Minnesota. Nobody was eaten by bears,
but someone may or may not have been trampled by a large blue ox.

Could you please tell the group that the Monday trail run, which was
supposed to meet at the ISU XC course, has been moved to Munn Woods?
Apparently the high school kids think they get to use the course too.
Skinny little bastards, now my federal holiday is ruined. Maybe more
bon-bons will cheer me up...

We'll meet in the Carr Pool parking lot at 5:30pm. Pace will be casual, and

1, 3, and 5-mile-ish routes are available. We'll figure it out when we get
there. Sore runners are invited to come walk out the lactic acid on some
soft, forgiving surfaces.

Thanks my man.

Mister Mullins, Leisure Consultant

Vardos InTheKnow report that Valentino’s is now open in their new location.  A post-run pizza buffet is indeed right and salutary.  Discuss.
