Hello Runners! The Des Moines Marathon is Sunday, October 19. For the second year in a row, Kecia Goodman and I will be volunteering at the event instead of running it.   I would like to invite any of you who are not running/walking/participating in the event to join Kecia and me in the volunteer efforts. Volunteering at a full marathon close to home where you can sleep in your own bed is the tops!

Please contact me
tcfencl@hotmail.com if you want to help out or have any questions. I have a volunteer contact person on the race committee so he can be of help as well.  Thanks for your time and consideration.   Father Fencl

Brother, Can You Spare A Ride

Here's Mike Mullins, World Traveler:

Operation Austrian Freedom commences Thursday and I could use rides to/from the airport.  Miser that I am, I can't bear to pay $52 for the privilege of parking my car in Des Moines.  Benefits: You can use my car, times are flexible, I'll pay you and/or bring you lederhosen, you'll be the first Vardo to meet mein schoenes Fraeulein, and you'll be abetting an international criminal.  What a deal!

I depart DSM: Thursday 9/24, 1:35pm.  Leaving Ames any time before noon would be fine.  Whatev works for you. WE return: Tuesday 10/6, 9:55pm.

Even if you could only manage one segment, please let me know, as I might be able to work something out with another driver.  That's the power of the Vardo Collective: the whole is greater than the sum of its Arts.  Vielen Dank!

Back By Popular Request:   A Classic Photo

Please see attached picture.  Since 1973, this picture has created much speculation amongst the Nation of Vardo.  What is The Bishop looking at? What is he thinking?  Some say he smells bacon - Aunt Maudes, perhaps?  Some think he is marveling at the figure Father Fencl cuts in them black lycra pants.  For others, the picture is one of divine inspiration.  Someday, we'll paint it on black velvet and sell it on the corner of Duff and Lincolnway.
