I just realized that I am scheduled to be routemaster on Saturday, June 20
which is when I will be out of the country enjoying the warm, blue waters
of the Bahamas from an average depth of about 50'. Is there anyone who
would be willing to be routemaster in my place?

First Up:  Some Clear Vision From Dr. Lehman (Tonight’s Routes) 

Hello fellow Vardos!

Hopefully the rain will not dampen this evenings runs.  The 3 mile will leave the Vardo center heading E to Kellogg. Turn N there to 13th.  Turn into Brookside Park via the bike path.  Stop at the water fountain if you wish.  Continue to 6th.  Head E back to the Vardamen Center via the Northwestern to 5th jaunt over the Grand overpass.

 

I plan to have water in the VC parking lot in the back of my new (to me) 2001 black Dodge Ram truck.  Alternatively, drink at the Vardo Center.  The 10 milers do this loop and then to Ada Hayden and back.  Head N on Clarke to 24th.  At Grand head North along the bike path and down the street to join the Ada Hayden crowd.  Head all the way N.  Grab a drink at the shelter there.  Continue around to S side ten back to the Vardo Center.

And Now:  It’s Dam To Dam Logistics

Put on your Big Boy Pants, man - it’s time for Dam to Dam.  I’ll suggest a car pool to meet at 4:50 AM Saturday morning, with wheels on the ground at  5:00 AM.  Meeting point:  West parking lot of the Quality Inn or Starlight Best Western or Great Barrier Reef or whatever that motel is at the intersection of 13th Street and Dayton.  (The usual meeting point.)  If you pick up my race packet (shirt size = Large) on Friday, you will earn the Seat of Honor in my Chevy Colorado,  I have room for three more passengers.  And, if you don’t mind riding to Des Moines in the pickup’s box under the tonneau cover, there’s room for a couple more (prone position, light refreshments not served).


Here’s A Reminder From Sister Goodman:  The Annual Pasta Palooza At Our Lady of Vardo Church

We will have our annual pasta feed Thursday (May 28th) before D2D at our house this year.  We will meet at 1425 Maxwell Ave for a short run (2-4 miles...depending on the interest of the runners) at 5:30 PM followed by the feeding frenzy.  As in the past, pasta will be provided, but we ask that you please bring your own beverages and a side/dessert to share with everyone.  We also ask that you bring your own chair as we will try to have everyone outside or in the garage if it is rainy/windy.    Kecia           (Editor’s Note:  If possible, bring a card table for setting up the fine buffet, and poker later.)

Yes, sorry I forgot to mention that tasty little tidbit, which is why I mentioned it as a suggestion to begin with.  Since the Church O' Our Lady Vardo and Associates is easily within sneaking distance of Casa Del Jorge, it would be very easy drop our little "love notes" in the object of our affection's front yard while he is busy opening gifts of bengay and diapers and the like and otherwise occupied.  Muhahaha (my sad attempt at an evil laugh…you get the idea). J

OK everyone, here's my ornery George idea that I'm stealing from a suggestion by Joyce Hagley (thanks Joyce!)…I'm sure you've all heard of card showers and this would be something similar but with a bit of a twist.  Do you have an old pair of running shoes (aka-mowing sneakers, LHF cast offs, etc.) laying around your house/garage just waiting for a new home?  WELL, I propose that sometime during the late evening hours of Thursday evening (or perhaps at some point during the annual pasta feed when we know that George will be at the church of Vardo and NOT at home) you drop said pair of shoes off in his front yard with a Happy Birthday note attached in some manner.  AND, since we are all civic minded folks, any shoes that are in good enough condition could then be donated afterwards to YSS (simply mark on the bottom of the shoes with marker "YSS" if you would like them to be donated to the greater good after our little birthday prank).  Also, Mr. Delaney, is there any way to give the old el Camino one last hurrah and decorate it in some obnoxious and meaningful way and move it down the street to in front of George's house?  For everyone else, old running shoes, cards, yard signs and decorated foam coolers would all be acceptable means of decorating Unkie George's house!!!!  (My apologies to Karen in advance for the mess!). 

 

There's my official birthday prank idea now open for discussion… J

Ok Vardos, this is going out to everyone except Unkle Jorge.  He has a point, his 50th is in fact next week, which coincides nicely with Dam 2 Dam I think, therefore I propose a fine Vardo Birthday Bash either post Dam 2 Dam, OR as part of a pre Dam 2 Dam pasta feed.  His official birthday is Friday the 29th.  Thoughts…

OK everyone, here's my ornery George idea that I'm stealing from a suggestion by Joyce Hagley (thanks Joyce!)…I'm sure you've all heard of card showers and this would be something similar but with a bit of a twist.  Do you have an old pair of running shoes (aka-mowing sneakers, LHF cast offs, etc.) laying around your house/garage just waiting for a new home?  WELL, I propose that sometime during the late evening hours of Thursday evening (or perhaps at some point during the annual pasta feed when we know that George will be at the church of Vardo and NOT at home) you drop said pair of shoes off in his front yard with a Happy Birthday note attached in some manner.  AND, since we are all civic minded folks, any shoes that are in good enough condition could then be donated afterwards to YSS (simply mark on the bottom of the shoes with marker "YSS" if you would like them to be donated to the greater good after our little birthday prank).  Also, Mr. Delaney, is there any way to give the old el Camino one last hurrah and decorate it in some obnoxious and meaningful way and move it down the street to in front of George's house?  For everyone else, old running shoes, cards, yard signs and decorated foam coolers would all be acceptable means of decorating Unkie George's house!!!!  (My apologies to Karen in advance for the mess!). 

 

There's my official birthday prank idea now open for discussion… J

In response to Kirstin's email, we will have our annual pasta feed next Thursday (May 28th) before D2D at our house this year.  We will meet at 1425 Maxwell Ave for a short run (2-4 miles...depending on the interest of the runners) at 5:30 pm followed by the feeding frenzy.

As in the past, pasta will be provided, but we ask that you please bring your own beverages and a side/dessert to share with everyone  We also ask that you bring your own chair as we will try to have everyone outside or in the garage if it is rainy/windy.

As George's 50th Birthday is Friday, we will have to have a celebration!!

OK everyone, here's my ornery George idea that I'm stealing from a suggestion by Joyce Hagley (thanks Joyce!)…I'm sure you've all heard of card showers and this would be something similar but with a bit of a twist.  Do you have an old pair of running shoes (aka-mowing sneakers, LHF cast offs, etc.) laying around your house/garage just waiting for a new home?  WELL, I propose that sometime during the late evening hours of Thursday evening (or perhaps at some point during the annual pasta feed when we know that George will be at the church of Vardo and NOT at home) you drop said pair of shoes off in his front yard with a Happy Birthday note attached in some manner.  AND, since we are all civic minded folks, any shoes that are in good enough condition could then be donated afterwards to YSS (simply mark on the bottom of the shoes with marker "YSS" if you would like them to be donated to the greater good after our little birthday prank).  Also, Mr. Delaney, is there any way to give the old el Camino one last hurrah and decorate it in some obnoxious and meaningful way and move it down the street to in front of George's house?  For everyone else, old running shoes, cards, yard signs and decorated foam coolers would all be acceptable means of decorating Unkie George's house!!!!  (My apologies to Karen in advance for the mess!). 

 

There's my official birthday prank idea now open for discussion… J

In response to Kirstin's email, we will have our annual pasta feed next Thursday (May 28th) before D2D at our house this year.  We will meet at 1425 Maxwell Ave for a short run (2-4 miles...depending on the interest of the runners) at 5:30 pm followed by the feeding frenzy.

As in the past, pasta will be provided, but we ask that you please bring your own beverages and a side/dessert to share with everyone  We also ask that you bring your own chair as we will try to have everyone outside or in the garage if it is rainy/windy.

As George's 50th Birthday is Friday, we will have to have a celebration!!

OK everyone, here's my ornery George idea that I'm stealing from a suggestion by Joyce Hagley (thanks Joyce!)…I'm sure you've all heard of card showers and this would be something similar but with a bit of a twist.  Do you have an old pair of running shoes (aka-mowing sneakers, LHF cast offs, etc.) laying around your house/garage just waiting for a new home?  WELL, I propose that sometime during the late evening hours of Thursday evening (or perhaps at some point during the annual pasta feed when we know that George will be at the church of Vardo and NOT at home) you drop said pair of shoes off in his front yard with a Happy Birthday note attached in some manner.  AND, since we are all civic minded folks, any shoes that are in good enough condition could then be donated afterwards to YSS (simply mark on the bottom of the shoes with marker "YSS" if you would like them to be donated to the greater good after our little birthday prank).  Also, Mr. Delaney, is there any way to give the old el Camino one last hurrah and decorate it in some obnoxious and meaningful way and move it down the street to in front of George's house?  For everyone else, old running shoes, cards, yard signs and decorated foam coolers would all be acceptable means of decorating Unkie George's house!!!!  (My apologies to Karen in advance for the mess!). 

 

There's my official birthday prank idea now open for discussion… J

In response to Kirstin's email, we will have our annual pasta feed next Thursday (May 28th) before D2D at our house this year.  We will meet at 1425 Maxwell Ave for a short run (2-4 miles...depending on the interest of the runners) at 5:30 pm followed by the feeding frenzy.

As in the past, pasta will be provided, but we ask that you please bring your own beverages and a side/dessert to share with everyone  We also ask that you bring your own chair as we will try to have everyone outside or in the garage if it is rainy/windy.

As George's 50th Birthday is Friday, we will have to have a celebration!!

Ok Vardos, this is going out to everyone except Unkle Jorge.  He has a point, his 50th is in fact next week, which coincides nicely with Dam 2 Dam I think, therefore I propose a fine Vardo Birthday Bash either post Dam 2 Dam, OR as part of a pre Dam 2 Dam pasta feed.  His official birthday is Friday the 29th.  Thoughts…

In response to Kirstin's email, we will have our annual pasta feed next Thursday (May 28th) before D2D at our house this year.  We will meet at 1425 Maxwell Ave for a short run (2-4 miles...depending on the interest of the runners) at 5:30 pm followed by the feeding frenzy.

As in the past, pasta will be provided, but we ask that you please bring your own beverages and a side/dessert to share with everyone  We also ask that you bring your own chair as we will try to have everyone outside or in the garage if it is rainy/windy.

As George's 50th Birthday is Friday, we will have to have a celebration!!

Ok Vardos, this is going out to everyone except Unkle Jorge.  He has a point, his 50th is in fact next week, which coincides nicely with Dam 2 Dam I think, therefore I propose a fine Vardo Birthday Bash either post Dam 2 Dam, OR as part of a pre Dam 2 Dam pasta feed.  His official birthday is Friday the 29th.  Thoughts…

In response to Kirstin's email, we will have our annual pasta feed next Thursday (May 28th) before D2D at our house this year.  We will meet at 1425 Maxwell Ave for a short run (2-4 miles...depending on the interest of the runners) at 5:30 pm followed by the feeding frenzy.

As in the past, pasta will be provided, but we ask that you please bring your own beverages and a side/dessert to share with everyone.  We also ask that you bring your own chair as we will try to have everyone outside or in the garage if it is rainy/windy.

As George's 50th Birthday is Friday, we will have to have a celebration!!

First Up:  Here’s Arturo Bartonando

The annual Spaghetti Fundraiser for ACS – Fri. Aug 21nd from 5:30 – 8:00 at Moose Lodge Family Center - is going to need some of those fabulous Vardo cooks again this year.  The VV's (Vardo Volunteers) have been fantastic for 3 years running on this event!  If you can help with this event please contact Art Barton at:  a.barton@mchsi.com

On Saturday morning, August 22nd, the "ACS 5K for Life of Story County" race will be held at Brookside Park.  Here's another event that many Vardos have been having fun with, as a volunteer and/or as a participant. For all who can get involved we have a "Vardo Team".  This is a fundraiser for the Story County Branch of the American Cancer Society, so all team members will receive a packet, complete with fund raising tips.  Rumor is there may be a special prize for the greatest fund raising team; look for more on this as it unfolds.  If you would like to be on the Vardo Team for ACS, and we really wish you would, please respond with an email back to George Klotzbach  klotzbach@msn.com

On Sunday morning, September 6th, GAAR (Great Ames Adventure Race) will be held at Ada Hayden Park.  This race is a lot of fun but has not had a lot of Vardo participation, just a few Vardos each year?  We need to up that!  This race is a real adventure, it includes kayaking (or canoe), biking, and running.  Proceeds from this race are used by the local Ames Paddlers, Biking, and Running Clubs to promote their Club causes of cleaner rivers, safer riding, and Arthritis research.  In the next few weeks more will be out on this race, including online registration opportunities, so go ahead now and pencil these dates on your calendars!

I am planning a minor Midwest trip to visit relatives & attend a class in Minnesota, and I'm hoping to stop in Ames on the way home so I can, among other things, run with the group on the evening of Tuesday, May 19. (I miss Vardo group runs!!!!) I would love especially to meet up with those of you who run slower than 10-minute miles. Whoever's doing the route that day -- I could help out. Just let me know.

 

Also, would anyone have a spare bed / couch / futon they would be willing to allow me to crash on that night before I have to drive back home to Illiana?
