Mr. Delaney Saves The Day

A fine bike ride to the Ledges with the Vardos on Sunday was into mile 5 when the chain broke on the the Delaney Tandem.  Not to fear - Mr. Delaney whipped out some funky Alien multifunction bike tool thingy that HAD A CHAIN TOOL as part of its compact arsenal.  Singlehandedly, Mr. D.  popped the chain rivet, took out a link, put the whole shebazz back together and rescued  the 27 mile ride from  certain disaster.  Three lessons learned:   Buy one of these fine bike tool units from our friends at Skunk River Cycles.  Carry a chain masterlink.  Do not look at Mr. Delaney when he is changing into his bike shorts in front of God AND THE REST OF THE CITIZENS OF BOONE IOWA FOR CRYING OUT LOUD MR DELANEY HAVE YOU NO SHAME AND NO WE ARE NOT INTERESTED IN YOUR "SECRET" TRAMP STAMP AND WOULD SOMEBODY PLEASE GET THAT MAN A TOWEL

First Up:  Professor Schultz With Tonight's Group Run Routes

Here are my routes for Tuesday's run.  Alas, I cannot be there yet again because of the business of work this week, but hope to see you all soon.  I have put the route near several drinking fountains so there should be ample water stops for people.  Have a great run!  Tom Schultz

And Now:  Some Timely Advice From Mrs. Dr. Jeff (Katie) Bradshaw

Some important advice to pass on to the Vardeaux: don't wear a bunny hat out on the trails (especially in southwest England)!   Katie Bradshaw

More Amish Stuff. We Want More Amish Stuff.

OK, man. You asked for it.  Take a look the attached video I received from my older brother, who (true fact) lives in Lancaster County, PA.

Habitat 500 Bike Ride Report

Windy, 16-18 mph pace lines on the Root River Trail and the Sakatah Singing Hills Trail, excellent food and nice public school gymnasium accommodations. Habitat Home construction in Rushford, MN (with a surprise of brand new bikes given to the homeowner and her two small kids), and just a hell of a lot of nice people to ride with (75% had ridden in 2008). We rode 100 miles on one day, and 87 on another. Usually 60 – 70 miles per day. I had no bike or tire problems (thanks to Skunk River Cycles). The ride is limited to 125 riders and is fully supported with a professional mechanic, a road marking crew, and a truck that hauls your gear. True Fact #1:  I slept in a second grade classroom with two lesbians who shared a queen size air mattress.  True Fact: #2:  I showered a couple of times with a gay man.  (I kept a firm grip on my bar of soap.) True Fact #3:  I ate like a pig (the food was unbelievable and all free) and still lost 4 pounds during the week.  (I lost 9 pounds last year – it was hotter.) A professional photographer accompanied the ride (all donated time) and will send every rider a DVD that documented the ride.  When I receive my copy, I would like to invite any Vardos who are interested in doing this ride to a DVD viewing at Casa del Klotzbach. Final notes:  There are some damn fine bike trails and smooth county back roads in southern MN.  And all the money I raised stays in Iowa for building Habitat for Humanity homes.

First Up:  A Fine Route From Sir Richard Bundy For Tuesday Night's Group Run

"I'm RouteMaster on Tuesday -- here are my selections for a 4 and 6 mile loop, per the calendar.  I'll have cold drinks at the finish -- the six milers can stop at Beyer Hall if they need something mid-route, but it should be cooling off by the time we start.  Let me know if you have questions -- if not, see you Tuesday!"  Rich Bundy

Substitute VardoGram Editor Needed Next Week

Well, man, next week is the Habitat 500 Bike Ride, and we need a guest editor for the VardoGram.  I'd like to suggest Kori Heuss for this honor.  However, because Team Vardo operates as a democracy (Canadian), Kori has been Duly Appointed as Editor unless a) one of you other clowns can snatch the pebble from my hand, or b) you beat up Kori.

Some important rules / guidelines / reminders for the VardoGram:

·        Do not forget to mention birthdays as listed on the VardoCalendar. Exception:  Chris Keenan's

·        Do not be a smart ass.  Nobody likes a smartass.  Unless a smartass offers you real bacon or a GU packet.

·        Avoid political references.  Avoid coarse language.  Do not express strong opinions. Exception:  Calling Sarah Palin a clueless shithead.

Do not cast aspersions upon members of the VardoFamily who were once part of a respectable Amish community, yet continue to exhibit a peculiar fondness for our meat-bearing farm friends.  Not to single out Brother Mullins, but you know who I am talking about.
·        If you find it necessary to report an item or story pertaining to Mr. Delaney, please remember that our e-mail list includes an Ames police officer, a district court judge, a real doctor, a native Idahoan, and an exotic dancer from Sioux Center who masquerades as a Mary Greeley Medical Center registered nurse.

Remember:  Most, but not all, topics referring to Art Barton and/or Art Bartonish activities are simply off limits for the VardoGram.

At this point I have heard that Natalie, Claudia, Mary and I will be running from my house at 6 a.m. on friday.

Eve will meet us at the bluestem sign

This means I'm putting out enough water for 5 people.  If anyone else is planning to run, please let me now by tomorrow as I'll be putting water in coolers over my lunch break tomorrow.

Thanks!
