First Up:   A Note From A Favorite Vardo - The Right Honorable Mr. Sir Jeff Margrett

“We about 10 days away from Captain Midnight's Run.  We are looking at a good year!  If you are interested in volunteering I can still use you.  If you want to run, that would be awesome as well.  Let me know if you need info on either!  Also, if any Vardo has one of those nifty four post tailgate type tents we'd love to borrow it.”  Please e-mail jeffmargrett@hotmail.com

(Editor’s Note:   Funds raised for Captain Midnight's Run go to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation - Iowa Chapter.  And, as many of you know, Jeff's son has Cystic Fibrosis.)

IronBrother Mullins - MapMyMission

Hey, hoser. Put down that Molson for a minute and take a look at the fine PDF attachment from Brother Mullins.  It's chock full o' details about his adventure to British Columbia (he flies there today) for Ironman Canada.  Best of luck to BM at the IM in BC!  (Note to BM:  We expect a full report of the event upon your triumphant return to AI.)

Tuesday's Group Run Route:  "The Fareway Frolic"

OK, man, I'm the RouteMaster for Tuesday night's group run, and what a fine route we shall have.  We will enjoy scenic vistas of all of the Ames area Fareway Stores (presently two). Be sure to stop for refreshments at that funky church along Bloomington Road, just east of the new Fareway and the railroad tracks. Stonebrook Church or BrookTrout Church or Stoner Church. Something like that.

I'll be stationed in the  church parking lot in my white Colorado truck, dispensing Holy Fastco water / GatorAde, along with a fine selection of Rick Warren / Joel Airstream inspirational quotations, and playing your favorite Amish Contemporary Gospel hits.  Light showers in the forecast - dress accordingly. Carrying (or wearing) a Fareway grocery bag earns bonus points.

Here's the route - feel free to make adjustments to suit your personal mileage goals for the evening:  http://www.mapmyrun.com/run/united-states/ia/ames/935125113360554947

Brief overview:  Vardaman Center to Northwestern, then 24th to the trail that kind of winds along the east edge of Northridge, parallel to G.W. Carver, head north to Bloomington, head east on Bloomington to Hoover (making note of Fareway #1, as well as stopping at Stonebrook Church to visit with HydrationBoy, who will have a tasty complimentary beverage for your enjoyment.

Then, head south on Hoover back to 24th, 24th to Duff, Duff to 8th, head west to Clark (so you go along the west side of Fareway #2), then back to the Vardaman Center.  Total distance for this route is 8 miles.  Again, feel free to salt and pepper the map to your taste / preference / dietary / training requirements.  Map isn't terribly accurate. So sue me.  Unless you are Tim Gartin or Chris Keenan, who actually know how to do this.

Update:  Mayor Moran New Bike Fund

Goal = $25.00 / Collected to date:  $7.34

Now accepting your empty pop and beer cans, as well as Betty Crocker coupons.  Corporate sponsorships available.  For example:  Using a Sharpie marker, we will write “Heuss Printing” on The Mayor’s right arm. Are there words to adequately describe  the thrill of watching John cross the finish line with “The Gentle Gardener – Ames, IA” plastered (tastefully)  on his left arm?  Answer: No, there are not.  Imagine the possibilities, then talk to a Team Vardo Corporate Sponsor Advisor.  (Note:  In lieu of monetary contributions, a decent, safe, functioning men’s bike would  also be accepted.)

Speaking of Bikes

What: Tire-Changing 101: How to change a flat tire on your bicycle.

When: Tuesday, August 25th, starting at 6:30pm (or come whenever you are done with your run)

Where: On the steps in front of the Vardo Center (Editor’s Note:  City Hall / Community Center)

Who: If you ride a bicycle, you need to know how to change a flat. If you race a bicycle (triathlon or otherwise), you REALLY need to know how to change a flat

Why: See "Who" above

Presented by: USAT-Certified Zoom Performance Coach, Julie Vardaman (Editor’s Note:  The Vardo)

Please bring: A bicycle wheel (you may bring your whole bike, especially if you want to also learn how to remove and replace your rear wheel...) Please also bring (if you have these (and you should)): 2 tire levers, a pump (preferably the one that you would be using out on the road if you suddenly had a flat, so this may be a frame pump or a CO2 system), a new tube (you only need to bring this if the wheel you are bringing already has a flat...) I will try to bring extras of everything and/or we will all share!

You will learn: What you need to have with you on your bike when you go for a ride, how to use all these items to change a tire, what to look for when you get a flat, and I will try answer any other questions that you have!!

The Mayor Moran New Bike Charitable Foundation

Many of you know that John Moran, the Mayor of Northeast Story City, is preparing for a duathlon to be held at the end of August.  You are also probably aware that he has been training for the 18 mile bike ride portion of this event. What you might not know is that his bike is . . .  well, actually, his bike is not . . . let's not mince words here:  I'm no biking expert, but I think the professional literature would refer to the Mayor's bike as a Royal Piece Of Shit (RPOS).

You would ask yourself:  Is it not true that the Mayor draws some fine cabbage as a key part of the crack Story City Administration team?  Is it not true that his wife, Carol, probably hauls in some serious coin in her role as the Ben Bernanke of the NADC?  What part of the Moran Household Monthly Budget prevents a line item for Bicycle Repair and Maintenance?  How about a line for Replacement of Thirty Five Year Old Bicycle?

After Saturday's group run, The Mayor, who had carefully stowed his RPOS in the box of his truck before driving to Ames, went for a training ride on the RPOS.  We all watched him arrive back at the Hy-Vee parking lot, and made careful observation of how he hit the brake at the end of his ride.  Notice I said "brake", not "brakes".  This is because the RPOS has one working brake. And you guessed it – the working brake happens to be the front brake.  John said he was taking the RPOS into Skunk River Cycles to have them fix the back brake, and see if they could correct "some of the wobble" in the rear wheel.  VardoNation, I am here to tell you that if you put a bike computer on the front wheel of the RPOS, and another on the back wheel, you would find that the rear wheel would measure 1.25 times the distance recorded by the front.

Friends do not let friends drive drunk.  Vardos do not let other Vardos ride a bike that makes them look like a drunk.  Therefore, we have established the Mayor Moran New Bike Charitable Foundation (MMNBCF).  There are approximately 100 names on the Team Vardo e-mail list.  If each and every one of you would kindly donate 25 cents to the MMNBCF, we would have $25.  Now you ask "But what kind of bike could we get for John with just $25?"  And my answer is ONE THAT IS FAR BETTER THAN THE PIECE OF CRAP HE HAS RIGHT NOW.  I would guess that Target or Wal-Mart would have some scratch n' dent men's Huffy mountain bike that fell out of its shipping container from Singapore, something lying around the back loading dock waiting for Waste Management to pick up, that they would gladly take twenty five bucks for. Heck, I don't care if we have to buy a pink women's bike, weld a Man Bar on to it, and paint the damned thing LiveStrong Yellow. We must replace the RPOS and save The Mayor from imminent disaster.  He would do it for you.  Yes he would.

So:  To start things off, bring 25 cents (that's one quarter) to Tuesday's Group Run.  We'll have a small container to collect your donations.  Please do your part and help stop the madness.  Thank you.
