First Up: A Note From A Favorite Vardo - The Right Honorable Mr. Sir Jeff Margrett
“We about 10 days away from Captain Midnight's Run. We are looking at a good year! If you are interested in volunteering I can still use you. If you want to run, that would be awesome as well. Let me know if you need info on either! Also, if any Vardo has one of those nifty four post tailgate type tents we'd love to borrow it.” Please e-mail jeffmargrett@hotmail.com
(Editor’s Note: Funds raised for Captain Midnight's Run go to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation - Iowa Chapter. And, as many of you know, Jeff's son has Cystic Fibrosis.)
IronBrother Mullins - MapMyMission
Hey, hoser. Put down that Molson for a minute and take a look at the fine PDF attachment from Brother Mullins. It's chock full o' details about his adventure to British Columbia (he flies there today) for Ironman Canada. Best of luck to BM at the IM in BC! (Note to BM: We expect a full report of the event upon your triumphant return to AI.)
Tuesday's Group Run Route: "The Fareway Frolic"
OK, man, I'm the RouteMaster for Tuesday night's group run, and what a fine route we shall have. We will enjoy scenic vistas of all of the Ames area Fareway Stores (presently two). Be sure to stop for refreshments at that funky church along Bloomington Road, just east of the new Fareway and the railroad tracks. Stonebrook Church or BrookTrout Church or Stoner Church. Something like that.
I'll be stationed in the church parking lot in my white Colorado truck, dispensing Holy Fastco water / GatorAde, along with a fine selection of Rick Warren / Joel Airstream inspirational quotations, and playing your favorite Amish Contemporary Gospel hits. Light showers in the forecast - dress accordingly. Carrying (or wearing) a Fareway grocery bag earns bonus points.
Here's the route - feel free to make adjustments to suit your personal mileage goals for the evening: http://www.mapmyrun.com/run/united-states/ia/ames/935125113360554947
Brief overview: Vardaman Center to Northwestern, then 24th to the trail that kind of winds along the east edge of Northridge, parallel to G.W. Carver, head north to Bloomington, head east on Bloomington to Hoover (making note of Fareway #1, as well as stopping at Stonebrook Church to visit with HydrationBoy, who will have a tasty complimentary beverage for your enjoyment.
Then, head south on Hoover back to 24th, 24th to Duff, Duff to 8th, head west to Clark (so you go along the west side of Fareway #2), then back to the Vardaman Center. Total distance for this route is 8 miles. Again, feel free to salt and pepper the map to your taste / preference / dietary / training requirements. Map isn't terribly accurate. So sue me. Unless you are Tim Gartin or Chris Keenan, who actually know how to do this.
Update: Mayor Moran New Bike Fund
Goal = $25.00 / Collected to date: $7.34
Now accepting your empty pop and beer cans, as well as Betty Crocker coupons. Corporate sponsorships available. For example: Using a Sharpie marker, we will write “Heuss Printing” on The Mayor’s right arm. Are there words to adequately describe the thrill of watching John cross the finish line with “The Gentle Gardener – Ames, IA” plastered (tastefully) on his left arm? Answer: No, there are not. Imagine the possibilities, then talk to a Team Vardo Corporate Sponsor Advisor. (Note: In lieu of monetary contributions, a decent, safe, functioning men’s bike would also be accepted.)
Speaking of Bikes
What: Tire-Changing 101: How to change a flat tire on your bicycle.
When: Tuesday, August 25th, starting at 6:30pm (or come whenever you are done with your run)
Where: On the steps in front of the Vardo Center (Editor’s Note: City Hall / Community Center)
Who: If you ride a bicycle, you need to know how to change a flat. If you race a bicycle (triathlon or otherwise), you REALLY need to know how to change a flat
Why: See "Who" above
Presented by: USAT-Certified Zoom Performance Coach, Julie Vardaman (Editor’s Note: The Vardo)
Please bring: A bicycle wheel (you may bring your whole bike, especially if you want to also learn how to remove and replace your rear wheel...) Please also bring (if you have these (and you should)): 2 tire levers, a pump (preferably the one that you would be using out on the road if you suddenly had a flat, so this may be a frame pump or a CO2 system), a new tube (you only need to bring this if the wheel you are bringing already has a flat...) I will try to bring extras of everything and/or we will all share!
You will learn: What you need to have with you on your bike when you go for a ride, how to use all these items to change a tire, what to look for when you get a flat, and I will try answer any other questions that you have!!

And Finally
Our good friend and the Founding Aunt of Team Vardo, Kori Heuss (now in three varieties: No Pulp, Some Pulp, and Good Lord Look At All That Pulp) sends us a fine bit of medical instrument history. Please see the attached picture, and be nice to Nurse Franken. She has access to similar devices.
