Father Fencl Speaketh

Hello Runners! The Des Moines Marathon is Sunday, October 19. For the second year in a row, Kecia Goodman and I will be volunteering at the event instead of running it.   I would like to invite any of you who are not running/walking/participating in the event to join Kecia and me in the volunteer efforts. Volunteering at a full marathon close to home where you can sleep in your own bed is the tops!

Please contact me
tcfencl@hotmail.com if you want to help out or have any questions. I have a volunteer contact person on the race committee so he can be of help as well.  Thanks for your time and consideration.   Father Fencl

Brother, Can You Spare A Ride

Here's Mike Mullins, World Traveler:

Operation Austrian Freedom commences Thursday and I could use rides to/from the airport.  Miser that I am, I can't bear to pay $52 for the privilege of parking my car in Des Moines.  Benefits: You can use my car, times are flexible, I'll pay you and/or bring you lederhosen, you'll be the first Vardo to meet mein schoenes Fraeulein, and you'll be abetting an international criminal.  What a deal!

I depart DSM: Thursday 9/24, 1:35pm.  Leaving Ames any time before noon would be fine.  Whatev works for you. WE return: Tuesday 10/6, 9:55pm.

Even if you could only manage one segment, please let me know, as I might be able to work something out with another driver.  That's the power of the Vardo Collective: the whole is greater than the sum of its Arts.  Vielen Dank!

Back By Popular Request:   A Classic Photo

Please see attached picture.  Since 1973, this picture has created much speculation amongst the Nation of Vardo.  What is The Bishop looking at? What is he thinking?  Some say he smells bacon - Aunt Maudes, perhaps?  Some think he is marveling at the figure Father Fencl cuts in them black lycra pants.  For others, the picture is one of divine inspiration.  Someday, we'll paint it on black velvet and sell it on the corner of Duff and Lincolnway.

There They Go (Again)

Our friends Mary, Kori, and Natalie, known in some circles as the Foxy Ladies of Team Vardo, head to the Fox Cities Marathon this weekend in Appleton, WI.  Good luck to Mary, also known as Lily (and Mary, Queen of 16th Street), Kori, also known as The Founding Aunt of Team Vardo (and the Duchess of Ferndale), and Natalie, also known as Natalie of the North (and Natalie).

Public Service Announcement #1

The sound of the early morning geese and the sight of deer peeking out of the corn remind us that the fall hunting season is near.  And here's a message to all you hunters like Brother Mullins who kill animals for food:  Shame on you. You ought to go to Fareway and buy the meat that was made there, where no animals were harmed.

Picture Request

At last Tuesday's Group Run, there was a request for a re-post of a photo taken of Bishop Sacco in which he strikes a reflective, contemplative, OK, I'll say it, intelligent pose. I can't find it on my computer. If anyone has it, send it to me and we'll get 'er in the next VG.

Public Service Annoucement #2

Thank you all!!!  Oh yeah, I'm still counting but we made over $5,000 for CF!!!!!

Here's Mr. Wheelock With Tonight's Group Run Route

This is the link to Tuesday night's route.
http://www.usatf.org/routes/view.asp?rID=321518

The route is approximately 4.25 miles.  It starts at City Hall and goes over to Northwestern up to 13th Street.  Then west to the bike path and south through Brookside & Stuart Smith Park.  In Stuart Smith Park, cross the bridge to S. 4th St and back to City Hall.  There are water fountains at Brookside and O'Neil Parks.  People wanting to do 10 miles would do the loop twice and instead of turning and going across the bridge to S 4th St, they would continue south on the bike path until S 4th Street.

Here's Art BAARton With The GAAR Results

Please see attached pdf.   A side note:  Our friend (and noted stunt woman) Jamile added another item at GAAR to her growing list of "Vehicles I Have Rolled." Her list now reads as follows:  1. My Truck.  2. My Kayak.

New Tuesday Night Group Run Rule

Due to an unfortunate (or fortunate, depending on your point of "view") incident last Tuesday evening, all group run routes must leave the Vardaman Center at 5:35 PM sharp and must head east towards Duff Avenue (past Tradewinds Lounge). Please consult with Mayor Moran, Brother Mullins, The Bill, or Mr. Klotzbach with questions or concerns about this new rule.  Note to Women of Vardo:  We "appreciate" your input and "value" your opinion(s) on this new rule.

Greetings Vardo Nation!

Come for a run this Saturday morning.  The weather calls for no rain and a high of 77.  It's going to be awesome!

In furtherance of your Labor Day Weekend celebration, I have provided the following musical delights as you review Saturday's runs:

Now for the routes.  All the routes (except for the last one) begin at Bruegger's Vardo Bagels and start at 7 AM.  The courses overlap as much as possible to maximize chatting, weaseling out of the ridiculously long run that you told everyone at work that you were going to do, or being peer pressured into a run that you know you should not do.  You should carry water.  (By reading this e-mail you hereby release me of any liability that can possibly happen in your lifetime, including dehydration.)

20 miles

Water at park on Oakwood, Mike's (24th & Hayes), and South end of Ada "Haden Fry" park.

15 miles

Water at park on Oakwood and Mike's (24th & Hayes),

12 miles

Water at park on Oakwood and Mike's (24th & Hayes).

6 miles

This is an out-and-back route for the first 3 miles of the other routes.  Water at park on Oakwood.

Bed to Fridge (Mike Mullins a/k/a Ironman, has earned a Saturday morning of watching Sponge Bob.  Congrats Mike!!!)

(Check out this route!)

Union meeting following the run at Bruegger's Vardo Bagels.  (Management not invited.)

Remember: Look for the union label.

Since it will be relatively cool tomorrow, there will be no water or Gatorade out on either route segment.  However, those fluids, or reasonable facsimiles thereof, will be found in coolers located near the front door of the Ironman Mike Mullins Hall of Fame.

Finally, a special prize will be awarded to the first Vardo who can tell me whether Arthur Miller was before or after Joe DiMaggio in Marilyn Monroe's lineup of husbands.     Regards,    The Other Bill

"My friend Chris is a cross country coach at East High in Des Moines and is in dire need of running shoes for his athletes. I know that many of you make donations of old shoes to other organizations in and around Ames, but thought I could ask you all anyway. Many of the student athletes at East High are less fortunate than students at other Des Moines schools, thus the reason for the request. Please contact me if you are interested in contributing. I would take care of the transportation of donated shoes."   Tim Fencl

Inglourius Basterds!  A Team Vardo Cooler Has Been Stolen!

Notes from the report filed by Officer Natalie:

"It was the Team Vardo blue cooler with the white lid that was missing Saturday morning from the State Street trail entrance.  Of course, they did leave all the trash! An APB has been issued to have everyone tailgating next Thursday to keep their eyes open.  I am not sure of the writing on it, but it does say "Team Vardo."  Maybe Officer Jan Schmidt will warn the other fine officers of Ames that if they see any Vardos trying to take away anyone's beer, it might be because it is in the Vardo cooler.  Of course, we too would leave the thieves with their trash."     Natalie of the North
