Tonight's Group Run. The Halloween Spooktacular Run.

Kori Heuss, The Founding Aunt of Team Vardo, speaketh:

"We will depart from City Hall and run up grand to Bloomington and return (approx 3+ mile run.)  Last year we had a great crowd with lots of enthusiasm and honks so we're looking forward to another good year.  I have a "bin of props" that I will bring but don't have enough for everyone, so please also bring your items from home as well or go all out and dress up like crazy!!!  The wilder the better I always say.  Note to
Kris Franken – I have your feather hat from Sara Lehman.  Will bring it.  We are expecting a scandalous outfit and maybe a play off dancing with the stars "dancing with the blow up doll".

(A late message from Kori states that she went "shopping" and now the "bin of props" includes, among other fine accessories,  a mullet hair piece.  You have been warned.)

And Now:  William Jenks

"I am planning to run Boston in April 2010 and travel solo to do it.  I have fallen off the Vardo email list (not unreasonable, since I hardly ever was actually running with you guys!), but I am wondering if anyone else might be in the same spot and interested in sharing a room.    I haven't made firm travel arrangements yet, but will very likely fly out on Saturday and return Tuesday (maybe Monday night if there is a good deal to be had on an evening flight).  My email is
wsjenks@iastate.edu, or I can be reached by phone at 451-4711."   William Jenks

Hello fellow Vardos,

Being unexpectedly busy this week, I decided to do the green thing and recycle an existing route:

It starts and ends at City Hall.  May I suggest we start at 8:00 AM.  I'll have water out at the locations shown on the route.  Hope to see you!

The Team Vardo Annual Holiday Awards Banquet - A Tradition Since 1973

OK, pretend you work for the DOT or ISU or the City of Ames or Shoppes on Grand or some other cash sucking parasitic entity. So the first order of business for any of these fine organizations is to form a study committee and hire some consultants to get the planning underway.  Next, we need is someone(s) to chair the Team Vardo Annual Holiday Awards Banquet Committee.  OK, thank you, Kori Heuss and Kirstin Peterson.  Now we need to decide where the committee will hold the TVAHAB planning meetings - OK, El Azteca.  Man, this is easier than I thought it would be . . . .

Hello Vardos!

Stephanie Cutler here (a 1st time for a half-marthon ever!) just wondering if we need to pick up our packets on Saturday in Des Moines? I was kind of thinking about going to get mine Saturday. This way I just show up on Sunday for race day. :-)

So...is anyone urging to do the same thing? Would anyone like to go with me? Several of us can go and carpool?
Thanks,
Stephanie Cutler

Here We Go:  Routes for Tonight's Group Run

Margaret Epplin and Ron Mowers, being first duly sworn, depose and say:

The VardoCalendar has 3 miles listed for both full and half marathons, so it's an easy, taper week.  Good luck to everyone participating in Des Moines Half/Full Marathon on Sunday.  May the weather be 50 and sunny.  Here are some oldies for Tuesday.  You can do one or both, depending on how many miles you need to run:

City Hall 3.13:  http://www.usatf.org/routes/view.asp?rID=330091

City Hall 4.22:  http://www.usatf.org/routes/view.asp?rID=330094

Ron and I will have water and Gatorade at City Hall until everyone returns.  See you Tuesday!    Margaret

A Public Service Announcement (And Picture) From Sister Stacey

1.  I'M BACK IN AMES!!! I thought we should celebrate with some tasty, cheesy deliciousness at El Azteca after our Tuesday run (Oct 13). I'm so happy to see all the Vardos again!

2.  Attached picture....It just had to be shared!
(Note to Professor Schultz:  Please retain picture for display / commentary at the Annual Awards Banquet.)

Mr. Barton declares:  "So this is why we do what we do!"  (see attached pdf)

Mr. Rosenberg With A Fine Request

"So I've been training with you guys for a while. I wanted to see if I could be RouteMaster one weekend. I'll be in town until mid-December."  Michael   (Editor's Note:  The grape Kool-Aid is working. Could someone donate a Saturday to Young Michael?)

Car Pool to Des Moines Marathon and Half Marathon

You're welcome to ride with me, folks.  That's the good news.  The bad news is that it takes me five damn hours to run 26.2 miles.  So you might want to schedule some dental work or plan a visit to your elderly aunt in Des Moines if you are planning to ride back with me. Someone throw out a car pool meeting time and location and we'll put something together and get the word out. Serving suggestion:  Comfort Inn / Best Western Starship Village or whatever it is out on east 13th at, say, 6:30 AM Sunday (?)  (Bishop Sacco to Bless The Shoes prior to departure.)

OK.  If you are playing mah-jongg online right now, put the damn thing on autopilot 'cuz we have some fresh beef to chew / digest / etc.

Behold:

Saturday Group Run Routes:   Russ The Laczniak and Kathy The Laczniak

Kathy and I have routes for Saturday.  If we read the schedule correctly, we are supposed to map six and eight mile runs.  The link for both runs are attached.  Since it is a tapering week, we will plan to start at 7:30 a.m.  We will put a cooler with water at the Brookside Bridge (on 13th street) and runners can also get water at various other public spots on the eight-mile route (e.g., Brookside Park, various campus buildings, etc.).  We will have bagels and juice after the run at our house (address is 818 Idaho Ave) and will be willing to allow visits with Joey The Goat (the most handsome goat in town) and Charlie The Dog.   Russ & Kathy Laczniak

Our good friend Mike Rosenberg also had a fine finish at this event on Sunday.  Mike joined Team Vardo earlier this year and trained like a machine all summer. Most excellent.

George,

Of course I didn't let you know this, but as Erin and I are getting married on Friday, we will be doing a Bride and Groom "Run for the Roses".  If anyone will be running, we will see them there!  :)

Scott Gall, owner of The Runners Flat store in Cedar Falls, speaketh thusly:

This is Scott Gall from The Runner's Flat in Cedar Falls and we are just wanting to offer a couple nights to Team Vardo that might be of interest.
1) Team Night-added discounts on everything in the store to do a private "team night" for shoe fitting, gait analysis.  You save more by doing so after hours when we can focus on helping your group w/out any distractions.

2) Snowshoe Adventure-sometime this winter we could travel to you to do a snowshoe clinic followed by a snowshoe hike/run.  If interested, we just need a solid date to assure enough snowshoes, etc.

Thanks for your time and just let us know if any of this might be of good interest. Scott Gall

And Now:  Mr. Delaney Runs His First Marathon. Survives, Succeeds, And Files Report

Twin Cities marathon report.  Start temp was mostly sunny and 40. Finish temp was cloudy and 40, ideal for running. Over 300,000 spectators lined this beautiful route around the lakes and rivers. Finishing time was 4:07:17.  Mr. Delaney

(Editor’s Note: I saw Mr.  Delaney yesterday.  He was walking kinda funny . . .but, shoot the horse and paint me red, 4:07 for a first marathon, and he has asthma . . . damn, Miss Kitty, that’s VardoRiffic.)

Another Marathon Finisher This Weekend:  Sister Stacey

Plenty of chatter on the Interpol wire the past two days regarding Sister Stacey Roberts and her fine performance at a marathon held in Austria or Germany or one of those other South African nations.  4:18 was her finish time..  Special Agent Rich Bundy (probably not his real name) provides the link with further details:   Sparkasse-Marathon   Update:  Sister Stacey now in custody of Brother Mullins, who is escorting Ms. Roberts to the safe house in Ames.

Tonight’s Group Run Routes. From The Kitchen Of Jamile

Tuesday night calls for two distances: 4 miles and 3 miles, respectively.

4-mile runners enjoy the Four Mile Fall Leaves Frolic:

3-mile runners enjoy the same route; however, continue east on 6th street, south on Northwestern, then back to the Community Center.

Caveat:  If frolicking expeditiously, one may miss the fall splendor. See ya Tuesday!   Jamile
