As I am route master this Saturday, here is the route:

Find someplace indoor to run as -10 degrees Fahrenheit without windchill is too cold to run outside.  Please see Vardo Laws that state group runs will cease to exist when the temperature drops below 0 degrees Fahrenheit.

Happy New Year!!

Fellow Vardo-a Go-Go's:  This week the VardoGram arrives early, as The Editor is headed to Independence and then to Mount Pleasant for a couple of days.  If Cherokee could have been worked into the plan, the route would have taken in ALL THREE of the state's mental health institutions.  The Tour de Lobotomy.  Thank me.   Now on with the show:

A Plug For YakTrax

Remember a few years ago when Danielle wore these funky things called YakTrax on her running shoes, and we all laughed at her, and called her names, and then shoved her head first into a snowbank? And then Mayor Moran got a pair of them, and we called him Moran Moron, and broke his glasses and made him run home crying?  And the rest of us cool kids swore we'd never wear those stoopid TraxYakkers or whatever. Well, I have a pair now and Mary, The Gentle Gardener has them, and they are the best things since sliced beets for running on snow and ice.  Get 'em at Emerhoff's and ask for the Team Vardo discount. Hell, buy a pair for you and a pair for your pet ferret.  But don't buy them 'til Wednesday, because I bought YakTrax stock and my online trade won't be executed until Tuesday afternoon.

Group Runs / Activities This Week

Tuesday:           5:30 PM Group Run - Vardaman Center for the Performing Arts.  YourRouteMaster: George Klotzenbauermannheimsteamrollerbach
Wednesday:     Snow and more snow.  The same day relived over and over again. No easy way to tell you this, but it's gonna involve an awful lot of Andie McDowell and Bill Murray.
Saturday:          A birthday:  Randy Foster.  Ask Randy sometime about his fine vacation home in Rochester, MN.  Yes sir. Mr. Randy Foster. Livin' The Dream.
Saturday:          Group Run.  Your RouteMaster:  Her Holy More-or-Less, Sister Kecia Goodman

Today's Top Story?  Tonight's Group Run

And here's Sister Goodman with the details:

Here are the routes for tonight's run.  I have a 4 mile route and a 6 mile route available for those who are brave (or crazy...I'm not sure) to fight the VERY COLD temperatures.  I will not be in attendance for the outdoor run, but will choose to run on the treadmill (aka - dreadmill) instead.  Please be safe as I have noticed that many of the sidewalks have not yet been cleared.  I tried to choose roads that are not as heavily traveled so you may be able to run in the road.

Those wishing to attend the nutrition clinic at city hall after the run (starting at 6:30) should think about doing the 4 mile route and changing into warm clothes so you don't shiver for the 1.5 hour nutrition clinic (If you don't change clothes, you may turn blue from lack of heat.  Change into WARM clothes!!).  I went to the nutrition clinic in Des Moines about 1 month ago and highly recommend this clinic to all of you!!  I will see you at the nutrition clinic (it was so good, I am going again)!!

Brother Mullins With An Immediate Bulletin

"Heads up!  Rich (Brother Bundy)  almost fell through an open manhole this morning on our run.  We think the lid got popped off by a snowplow.  In the early light the hole looked just like normal lid until we were already striding over it.  We found the lid in a snowpile further down the sidewalk and put it back on, but damn that was close.   So anyway, please be careful out there and stay alert."   Mike Mullins

Brother Rasmussen With The  Memphis Marathon Report

"The Memphis Marathon is fun.  I like that it is a Saturday run and the locals are excited to see the runners.  The people on Beale Street are awesome!  My run didn't quite match fun in the city, but I'm not going to complain.  After 2 failed training attempts for Memphis, it is done!  I had decided on a 3:42.  At just under 20 miles, I could still see the 3:40 pace group just up the road from me.  I walked about 20 steps drinking, and when I planted my right foot to take off running again, I about fell to the ground.  I made it about 2 blocks as I watched the 3:45 and 3:50 groups pass by, downed a couple advil from a spectator and a beer from the hash runners free beer stop, and was able to jog / walk in to the finish.  The dr. at the med area said they were seeing a lot of runners with a similar injury, he thinks because of the side-slope on some of the route in the middle miles.  He also said, after giving me grief for finishing, 'runners are a strange bunch'.  Personally, I think he is right!"   Tim Rasmussen

Here's Something Different

"Hi Team Vardo, My name is: Dr. Zachary Ward.   My email address is:  drzward@fastmail.fm   I'm putting together a forum on the long distance athletics and the effect of a short leg (often identified by orthopedists, physical therapists, podiatrists, and chiropractors as the "short functional leg") and its relationship to injury, balance, and endurance. Would anyone in your running group be interested in participating, or at the very least, attending?"

Best Regards,
Dr. Zachary Ward

Mrs. Dr. Professor Schulz Erin Pederson With Tonight's Route

"I think this'll work for the 5-mile route tomorrow…although I don't know how the blizzarding will affect the surfaces. I may or may not be there depending on how treacherous it is. I like warm cozy spaces and unbroken ankles. Or it could be fun to scramble through the winter wonderland! The route goes up Ridgewood to 13th, then south on the Brookside trail, continuing south through Stewart Smith Park, then east to Duff, north to 5th St., & then west back to City Hall."     http://www.usatf.org/routes/view.asp?rID=339324      Erin Pederson

City street repair alerts used to be under the purview of Art the Barton.. Art the Barton, who is now in winter hibernation.  Comes now Sir Greg Wool, who will guide us until spring, when Art rolls away the stone, peeks out of his snug little den along the banks of the Skunk River, and hands everyone a basket of Peeps:

Fellow runners,
The route for Saturday looks quite good; I especially like that it is relatively easy to memorize.

I think there is a problem though.  Last I checked, Kellogg where it crosses the railroad tracks is closed for construction.  Anyone know if that includes the sidewalks?

If an alternative is needed, I would suggest--ahem!--my street, Clark Avenue (known as Walnut south of Lincoln Way).

You Say You Want A Picture From Last Thursday's Turkey Trot At Ada Hayden Heritage Memorial Warren Madden Provincial Park?

Then you'll be most pleased with the fine attached picture, snapped by Brother Rasmussen. Fifteen Vardos and one dogette attended the run around the lake.  The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead when the skies of November turn gloomy.

The Most Excellent Annual Team Vardo Awards Banquet

Yes, indeed, this fine soiree will be held on December 18th at the Pizza Garden, 5:30 PM.  Bring your medals, awards, and maybe that quilt you have been stitching together all year.  And now here's more on the party from the Founding Aunt of Team Vardo, Kori Heuss:

White Elephant Gift:  Search your home, search your neighborhood, search the ditches, but bring something interesting (wrapped please) to place on the white elephant table for our gift exchange.  You do not need to spend money.  The present does not have to be nice.  Looking for a place for that old Millie Vanilli soundtrack?  This is it.

Schwag Table:  Purchased a running shirt that is three sizes two small?  Got a Carb Boom in a race bag but Carb Boom makes you fart?  Bring all new and gently used gear to exchange on the schwag table and pick something you like in exchange.

Awards Ceremony:  New this year,Team Vardo awards.  Please review the attached file (VardoAwards.pdf) and nominate your friends.  Winner's awards will be presented at the banquet on the 18th.  So, please email your nominations to kori@heuss.com before December 11th to allow me time to make the perfect award presentation.
